Description

We used European Oak for this beautiful dyed veneer reference. First of all, oaks are one of the dominant broadleaf species of temperate Europe. The trees grow 20 to 30 m tall with diameters ranging from 40 to 80 cm. European oak flats, on the other hand, in terms of colour, generally tend to be darker compared to American oak flats. Unlike American oak, which will often have a large variation in colour between its boards, European oak will have a much more uniform colour tone. The heartwood is light to medium brown, commonly with an olive cast, although there can be a fair amount of variation in colour. The almost white to light brown sapwood is not always sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Quarter-sawn sections show prominent ray-spotted patterns.

Secondly, the grain is straight, with a coarse, uneven texture. May have irregular or interlocked grain depending on the growing conditions of the tree. Ring-porous; 2-4 rows of large, exclusively solitary earlywood pores, numerous small to very small latewood pores in radial arrangement; tyloses abundant; distinct growth rings; rays large and conspicuous without lens; apotracheal parenchyma diffuse in aggregates (short lines between rays).

Sapwood is thin, 1 to 4 cm, and white. The clearly demarcated heartwood is light to dark brown. The oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture.
The annual rings and rays are clearly visible, oak is a ring porous wood. European white oak is a hard and heavy wood with medium strength properties. Machining is good, nailing and screwing properties are good, but pre-drilling is necessary. Gluing must be done with care, the wood is dense, slightly acidic and rich in tannins.

On the other hand, the Europeans have a technique of taking a “square” from the centre of a log, called cant, and cutting it directly. It also has a slower growth cycle, which produces a tighter grain. The result is a wider plank, typically 7-10″, with a beautiful flat sawn look near the centre, flanked by a unique crack and quarter grain pattern, all on the same piece of wood. Yes, you read that right, all three cuts in one plank!

One of the most famous English oaks, The Major Oak, is a massive tree located in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, England. The tree is estimated to be approximately 1,000 years old, and is thought to have been a common hiding place for Robin Hood and his outlaws.

This timber species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, and is reported by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as a species of Least Concern.

We always work hard to provide materials that are environmentally friendly, controlled and sustainable. So that our customers can feel comfortable knowing that we care about the environment and the health of our forests.

Natural wood veneer is obtained from the trunk of a tree, by cutting large blocks of chopped wood, we obtain raw natural wood veneers. Each package of natural wood veneers is unique, no two trees are the same, so you can’t get natural veneers that are 100% the same. Even the same wood species do not have identical patterns. We can supply not only thick veneer, but also paper thin veneer, standard 0.5 mm veneer, rough cut veneer, engineered floor top layer veneer, exotic wood veneer (always FSC approved or controlled).

All the products we manage comply with EUTR guidelines, and those of the General Directorate for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

Range: One of the most frequent species of the tree in Europe forests, occurs mostly as pedunculate or sessile oak. The most well-known locations for high quiality veneer oak are the Spessart and Palatinate in Germany and Troncais in France. Starting in the mid-nineties, imports from Eastern Europe have constantly been increasng due to extensive occurrences of oak forests there. Oak does not exist in Central and North Scandinavia. Very good girths (diameters from 0,80cm and more) often occurs.

Common uses: Sliced veneers for faces, wood for interior fixtures as veneer and as sawn wood for furniture, paneling, parquet and stairs, construction lumber, fibre- and chipboard.

Properties: The heartwood is light brown to yellow brown and farkens later. Narrow-ringed, i.e. close-grown, very light-colored wood is given preference for veneer. Winter felling and intensive log protection are necesary. For a long time it was the most important veneer wood in Germany and even today veneer production is unthinkable without it. Blue stain occurs in wet wood upon contact with metal.

Machining: Despite its hardness Oak can be well machined with all tools. Planed surfaces are very smooth. Good results can be achieved when molding and turning.

Seasoning: Drying Oak is an extremely slow process. There is a strong tendency for Oak towards surface checking and inner case-hardening. Satisfactory drying can only be ensured by taking the greatest of care.

Finishing: Oak takes all surface finishes well and treatment presents no problems.

Jointing: Glue joints are strong and durable. Screw and nail joints hold firmly but discoloration in the wood can be caused through the effects of moisture.

Workability: Produces good results with hand tools and machine tools. May react with iron (especially when wet) and cause staining and discolouration. Responds well to steam bending. Bonds, stains and finishes well.

Dyeing process: All the materials we use in our woods for all colour processes are water-based and made from natural ingredients. The dyed veneer uses a special technology that is applied to the substrate. The veneer undergoes bleaching and purification, which works to remove chemical and toxic components from the wood. The veneer is then immersed in the dye solution. This process ensures a consistent depth of colour throughout the thickness of the veneer.
