Description

We used Zebrano for this beautiful smoked veneer. Smoked Zebrano is also known as zebrawood because of its distinct dark brown and cream colored strips with interlocked grain and course texture. Its heartwood is light brown or cream with dark blackish brown stripes that vaguely resemble the stripes of a zebra. Depending on whether the wood is sawn flat or quarter sawn, the stripes can be chaotic and wavy (flat sawn) or somewhat uniform (sawn).

It has a fairly coarse texture and open pores. The grain is usually wavy or interlocked. Zebrano has diffuse-porous; pores large to very large with no specific arrangement, few to very few; solitary and radial multiples of 2-3; heartwood deposits (brown) occasionally present; narrow rays not visible without lens, spaced fairly closely; parenchyma diffuse in aggregates, unilateral, vasicentric, winged, lozenge and confluent, and banded (marginal).

Wood saws well, but may be very difficult to plane or surface due to prevalence of interlocking grain. Tearing is common. SMOKED ZEBRANO glues and finishes well, although a clear pore filler may be necessary for the large open pores that occur on both dark and light surfaces.

Smoked zebrano tends to be quite expensive, although it is generally not as prohibitively expensive as other exotics such as ebony or rosewood.

This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices and is reported by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). It is listed as vulnerable due to a population reduction of more than 20% in the last three generations, caused by a decline in its natural range. (A closely related and lesser used species in Cameroon, Microberlinia bisulcata, is also listed as critically endangered).

We always work hard to provide materials that are environmentally friendly, controlled and sustainable. So that our customers can feel comfortable knowing that we care about the environment and the health of our forests.

Natural wood veneer is obtained from the trunk of a tree, by cutting large blocks of cut wood, we obtain raw natural wood veneers. Each natural wood veneer package is unique, there are not the same trees, so you can not get natural veneers 100% the same. Even the same wood species do not have identical patterns. We can supply not only thick veneer, but also paper thin veneer, standard 0.5mm veneer, rough cut veneer, engineered floor top layer veneer, exotic wood veneer (always FSC approved or controlled).

All the products we manage comply with EUTR guidelines and those of the General Directorate for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

Properties: the heartwood is light grey to yellow woth distincs dark brown stripes. Greatly resistant to funghi, insect infestation (particularly termites) and the weather. Zebrawood is extremely dependent on fashion trends although it is a very decorative wood. Degrading are the so-called “barber wire” lines which interrupt the black stripes. These effect te uniform appearance of the veneer.

Seasoning: The wood must be very carefully dried at a controlled speed because it is very prone to checking and warping.

Workability: Produces good results with hand tools and machine tools. May react with iron (especially when wet) and cause staining and discoloration. Responds well to steam bending. Bonds, stains and finishes well. When free of resin, Zebrawood varnishes ad polishes well. The resin content, if too high, should be washed out before finishing.

Common Uses: Smoked Zebrano veneer is perfect for all types of veneer applications. Zebrawood is frequently surfaced. Other uses include: tool handles, furniture, boat building and skis. Primarly sliced veneer, occasionally rotary cut for face veneer, used for furniture, luxury architectural woodwork, today used especially for dashboard paneling in the automobile industry. It is almost always quarter sliced.

Comments: Sometimes called Zebrano, the wood is strong and stiff, with a fairly high density. However, the wood is used much more often for its bold and unique striping.

Fuming was an accidental discovery in England after it was noticed that oak boards stored in a barn had darkened. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries fuming became popular with furniture makers in the Arts and Crafts movement. The technique was introduced to the United States by Gustav Stickley in 1901 and a manufacturing technique was perfected in the Stickley family firm’s line of mission style furniture.

Smoking veneer is excellent, especially for transforming old material into usable veneer for high-end projects. Our process has been refined over the years to ensure that the best results are achieved every time. As a result, your veneer will have rich colors and a beautiful depth of contrast. The process works best on white oak due to the high tannin content of this wood. Smoked oak is also called smoked oak.
