Description

We used Erable Birdseye for this DyedVeneer reference. Birdseye, one of the rarest types of wood on the planet, has a distinctive pattern that looks like small, swirling eyes that interrupt smooth grain lines. This is not a variety or species of maple, but rather a phenomenon that occurs within various types of wood due to an unknown cause. The valuable anomaly could show the wood’s reaction to a fungal or viral infection, genetic mutation, bird pecking, climate change, soil conditions, growth history or some other mysterious element. Special form of Hard Maple (Sugar Maple) in which the so-called Birdseye form around the log due to “sleeping bud growth”. This shows as small dots in the wood. There are many theories on the cause of the Birds eye but none of these could be proved conclusively up to now:

  • parasite fungui which cause an irregularity in the cambium;
  • Birdseyes develop when the tree grows on barren and rocky ground or under tension;
  • genetic causes.

Bird’s eye has a medium density and variable colour. The outer rings of the tree create wood that is generally a light, creamy amber colour with darker bird’s eye patterns. The inner rings, called heartwood, can be deep amber or reddish with dark brown bird’s eye. Birdseye figured wood is no different from other wood from the same tree.

Since bird’s eye is not a distinct species, the information written below is for hard maple (Acer saccharum), although end grain images show a sample with bird’s eye figure for reference. See the Hardwood Anatomy article for definitions of end grain characteristics.

Porosity: diffuse porous. Arrangement: multiple solitary and radial Vessels: small to medium; Moderately numerous to numerous Parenchyma: banded (marginal) stripes: both narrow and wide; Normal spacing Resemblances/Substitutes: Sometimes confused with soft maple species, hard maple can sometimes be differentiated on the basis of weight, where hard maple is markedly heavier than some lighter species such as silver maple (Acer saccharinum). In addition, hard maple has a greater diversity of ray widths when looking at the end grain (ranging from narrow to wide rays), while most other native North American maples have more uniform medium-width rays. See the article on how to distinguish hard and soft maple for more information, including chemical tests.

Birdseye and other figured maples never like to be planed and always work best with sanders rather than planers. Always move with caution with these woods. All maples glue relatively well.

This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, and is not on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List.

We always work hard to provide materials that are environmentally friendly, controlled and sustainable. So that our customers can feel comfortable in the knowledge that we care about the environment and the health of our forests.

Natural wood veneer is sourced from the trunk of a tree, by cutting large blocks of chopped wood, we obtain raw natural wood veneers. Each package of natural wood veneers is unique, no two trees are the same, so you can’t get natural veneers that are 100% the same. Even the same wood species do not have identical patterns. We can supply not only thick veneer, but also paper thin veneer, standard 0.5 mm veneer, rough cut veneer, engineered floor top layer veneer, exotic wood veneer (always FSC approved or controlled).

All the products we manage comply with EUTR guidelines, and the Directorate General for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.

Common uses: High quality architectural woddwork, high quality furniture. For price reasons often copied by fineline veneers (Artificial Birdseye Maple). At the present time it is fashionable to color-stain or dye Birdseye Maple in all thinkable colors (chemical treatment not permitted in Germany due to waste water comtamination).

Properties: Often slight changes in color within one log from a yellowish white on the outside to reddish in the heart of the log. In addition frequently occurring black patches and brown “sugar patches”. Trunks over 2,70m long are rare due to their small dimensions.

Machining: Smooth surfaces can be produces by using carbide-tipped tools and adjusted feed speeds. The same applies to molding. The burn risk has to be considered.

Seasoning: Drying must be carried out very slowly and carefully to prevent checking and warping.

Jointing: Glue joints hold well. Screw joints should be pre-drilled.

Comments: Called erable bird’s eye (sometimes written as bird’s eye) because the small knots in the grain resemble small bird’s eyes. The figure is reportedly caused by unfavourable growing conditions for the tree. The tree tries to initiate numerous new shoots to get more sunlight, but with poor growing conditions, the new shoots are aborted, and then a series of small knots remain.

Dyeing process: All the materials we use in our woods for all colour processes are water-based made from natural ingredients. The dyed veneer uses a special technology that is applied to the substrate. The veneer undergoes bleaching and purification, which works to remove chemical and toxic components from the wood. The veneer is then immersed in the dye solution. This process ensures a consistent depth of colour throughout the thickness of the veneer.

Erable Birdseye Natural Veneer is perfect for all kinds of veneer applications, but solid wood is also available. Being small knots, the birdseye figure is more noticeable and pronounced on sawn pieces of wood. For more information on strength and working characteristics, please refer to the full article on hard maple (Acer saccharum).
